May Architecture teamed with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill on this new 17 story, 455,000-square-foot cancer hospital on a 3.4-acre site in the Midtown neighborhood of Atlanta.
The project developed a transformative new care model by integrating services into five 2-story care communities centered around disease types. Each care community has its own inpatient and outpatient floor. The outpatient floors utilize ‘universal rooms’ such that after being roomed, the services come to the patient. For example, blood draw, examination, and infusion all occur within the same room. Each care community also includes specialty areas that are specific to the treatment of the cancer types in that community.
In addition to the care communities, the project includes a 4-vault radiation therapy suite located on the main level for ease of access; a 20,000 SF imaging center; and a 40,000 perioperative floor with 10 operating rooms, 2 endoscopy rooms, and 2 interventional radiology rooms. The building includes an immediate care clinic dedicated to oncology patients. A new central sterile processing suite, a new central lab and a new central pharmacy support the clinical operations.
There are several patient amenities in the building including a large café complete with a future outdoor rooftop garden, survivorship integrated oncology services, spiritual services, and a staff and patient favorite Starbucks café – the largest Starbucks in the State of Georgia.
Several sustainable features were incorporated into the design, including an ambitious goal to expend 40% less energy annually than the average hospital in Atlanta. The facility is designed and built with energy efficiency in mind, and is targeting a LEED Silver certification.
