Hospital Tower

Atlanta, Georgia

May Architecture worked closely with hospital administration and its art advisory committee, commissioning twelve artists to develop an art program for a new building at the hospital system’s primary campus. Monumental, site-specific sculpture and large-scale two-dimensional work including pastel, multi-media and photography were commissioned from artists who had a direct connection to the Atlanta region. In total, May Architecture procured and oversaw installation of 243 distinct pieces of art.

Each of the patient and ICU rooms has a large-scale photograph providing a unique view of the State of Georgia. The photographs represent the four topographical regions found in Georgia: Atlantic coast, Piedmont farmland, Northern mountains, and metropolitan Atlanta. Artists throughout Georgia were invited to submit images, and 24 distinct images from five different artists were selected. In public spaces, large-scale site-specific sculpture merge the visual aesthetic with healthcare concerns, specifically referencing spiraling DNA composition. Additional artworks in the public area make direct reference to elements of nature: wind, water, trees.
